Successful weight loss secrets: Marrisa Martin loses 83 pounds

If you were told that you have to lose 83 pounds in the next twelve weeks and a complete team of specialists was there ready to help you… would you sign up to do it? Think about it! That’s almost 8 pounds a week that you have to lose, and no matter how many people are there “helping”, you still have to make that commitment and do the work.

Despite the odds, Marissa Martin of Chicago, took on that challenge for a reality weight loss show airing on NBC Nonstop and did just that! With a team led by Stephanie Mansour, AKA “Step it up with Steph“, she hit her goal of losing just under 90 pounds in three months. Steph, her personal trainer and coach on the journey brought on amazing partnerships including the Raby Institute of Intergrated Medicine at Northwestern which managed her health from a combined Eastern and Western medicine philosophy. Dr. Theri Raby’s practice combined internal medicine, natropathic doctors, acupuncture, and other holistic modalities to help her steady weight loss and continued health which was key in the success.

Stephanie arranged the Fresh Diet for Marissa’s nutrition which was secondary managed by Raby Institute’s natropath when things would plateau. Her acupuncturist, Michele Angel was also key in getting her digestive track moving. Stephanie also planned her entire workout regimen having Marissa workout at least twice a day as well as combined yoga, strength training and cardio into her workouts.

Stephanie knew the importance of recovery in a strenuous program, however and instilled the services of Hope Jenilekberry, therapeutic massage therapist in Marissa’s program. Hope combines chakra centering and whole body massage to rejuvenate and revitalize Marissa’s tired body on a weekly basis.

Although Marissa and Stephanie did not win the show’s grand prize of $5,000 they did qualify for the drawing and were paid $880 for the weight loss. The show “Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is” pays people $10 for every pound they lose as an incentive. You can rally around your friends and help them succeed with www.Healthrally.com. This crowd sourcing motivation can help you run your first race or stop smoking. You pick the goal and ask your friends for their financial and inspirational support.

All in all, money is a good motivator, but it really comes down to self determination. Congrats Marissa on an amazing accomplishment!

Men are taking it all off – “manscape your athlete”

Even seconds can separate the leading runner in a triathlon and getting road dirt scraped into a hairy thigh from a bike wipe out can be horrible to clean the wound. That said, more men are shaving down their bodies to be sleek and smooth like that of their female counterpart competitors. Plus women like the idea of less hair on a man’s back compared to a wool sweater!

Even a touch of Brazil has made it into the male grooming regimen. Magazines and celebrities are baring it all even down there for both men and women. In fact, surveys says that the partners enjoy a smooth surface to a bristly one.

The only problem lies for both sexes is the constant shave and bump issues that might arise to getting a well groomed, athletic competitor edge body. There is a recent trend for men to be using hair electrolysis as a viable option for permanent hair removal. In fact, electrolysis is the only permanent hair removal method approved by the FDA. Through electrolysis, the hair follicle is destroyed via a tiny amount of electricity. Most clients experience a slight sting. Electrolysis works on a large variety of hair and skin types, and is suitable for clients of any gender or age. So, whether you’re an elite cyclist training for the Tour de France, or a full-time Dad and part-time runner, a permanent hair removal solution is within reach.

Top Three breakfast Meals to Eat Anytime

We all have heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day but why wait for morning to eat breakfast?  Here are my top three favorite breakfast menu items that I sometimes eat for an afternoon snack or even dinner!

1. Green juice- Use a Vitamix or other high powered blender to pulse 2 cups green curly kale, one chopped apple, 1/2 cup of water, 1/2 cup of grapefruit juice, 1/4 cup of Egg Beaters 100% Natural egg whites.  Blend and sip for an after noon snack.

2. Veggie three Cheese Quiche - use a frozen pie crust (9 inch) thawed and cut up 1 cups of fresh veggies  Mix with 1 cup of skim milk and 1 cup of Egg Beaters 100% Natural egg whites.  Blend and season with fresh herbs and pepper.  Bake 45 minutes at 450 degrees.

3. Banana freeze – Take 2 bananas peeled and place in Tupperware container into freezer.  Once frozen place in a blender with 1 teaspoon vanilla and 2 tablespoons Justin’s Almond Nut Butter.  Blend into a drink and YUM

Quick, simple, easy and best of all you don’t have to wait to have them for just breakfast.  Try one sometime soon they are #unbeatable!

Dream Bigger to Be Inspired

In the last year, I have had a best selling book, (Naked Fitness) appeared on the NBC Today show twice, flew an F16 jet fighter, traveled down under to Queensland, Australia, learned to surf in Costa Rica, and even climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, the single tallest standing mountain in the world. Like living healthy and making good choices of what one puts into their body, there are choices we make everyday that center our lives. We create them. We cannot be responsible for others actions or acts of nature, but how we react and what we believe is clearly up to us. We shape our lives and can chose to live our dreams.

This week is the Women’s Dream Conference in Chicago. We have put together a conference to help inspire women to make a difference. More than twenty successful, entrepreneurial women speakers from around the country will share their secrets at the Women’s Dream Conference. This event put together by myself, JMP Global’s Jennifer Christensen and Monika Dixon, will be an amazing day to partake.

With Trevian Kutti filming for HBO Women in Chicago documentary to live streaming the event on line with Womensforum.com, we hope to help women create their dream life. Social media converging with traditional media helps build these rockstar brands from Angela Rose, PAVE founder to MJ Tam, Chicagonista to keynote NBC Biggest Loser, Marci Crozier or DC Housewive’s Mary Amons. It will be a day to learn, network and be inspired to dream bigger.

Dream a new life: Andrea Metcalf to help women create their dream lives

With a troop of Chicago’s most successful and inspirational women, Fitness Personality and “Naked Fitness” Author Andrea Metcalf will unleash the secrets to creating the life of one’s dreams during her Women’s Dream Conference at Centered Chef on April 13, 2012. The Women’s Dream Conference is a networking and coaching event designed to offer women a blend of forums and interactive workshops that will cover everything from social media strategies to healthy living.

“This is an event that will change lives,” Metcalf said. “I strongly believe we will inspire women to find the careers they truly want and help them align their goals in the direction of where they want to go.”

Metcalf conceived the vision for the Women’s Dream Conference in 2009, when she realized she needed to shift gears in her career and create a new life. This desire for reinvention led Metcalf to dream up a women’s conference that would inspire business professionals, career seekers, bloggers, and women who needed a rejuvenating jumpstart on recreating their careers and lives. One of her mottos is to love what you do and create it.

“We can all use a little insight these days in getting ahead in business, understanding the impact of social media as well as developing our own personal brands and health,” Metcalf said. “This event will cover topics that will inspire women to do more for them selves.”

Frequently mentored by positive female role models when she was starting out, Metcalf decided she wanted to help other women build a similar network of contacts and mentors.

Metcalf has lined up over twenty powerful speakers for this April’s conference, including Corporate Marketing Strategist Sandra Kumorowski, Social Media Strategist Beth K. Rosen, Sequin’s Director of Brand Development Frances Rank, Director of CoryWest Media, LLC and PR Consultant Barbara Rozgonyi, Orthopedic Surgeon and Performance and Research Initiative for Masters Athletes (PRIMA) Founder Dr. Vonda Wright, NBC 5 Chicago Fitness Coach Saran Dunmore, BeeCloser Founder Monika Dixon, Magazine Editor and Journalist Audarshia Townsend, Emmy-nominated Digital Megaphone Founder and CEO Hope Bertram, Media Personality Jennifer Christenson, and Promoting Awareness, Victim Empowerment (PAVE) Founder and Activist Angela Rose.

“I never imagined that I would be on NBC, or that I would have my own show, but now I can’t imagine myself doing anything else, Metcalf said. “I want other women to realize that it’s possible for them, too.”

The Centered Chef venue is located at 177 N. Ada Street, Chicago, IL 60607 in the West Loop, just steps away from Oprah’s Chicago studio. The event is scheduled to run from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and an optional yoga workshop will be offered before registration and check-in at 7:00 a.m. that morning.

Is A Vegetarian Diet Healthy?

I recently was introduced to Karyns Raw in Chicago. It’s an amazing place where vegan, gluten free and lactose free foods are found in familiar packages. That said, I interviewed Toby Amidor, a registered dietitian, to share her thoughts on this way of life.

Are vegetarians are healthier than carnivores?

here’s her answer: : it depends. Becoming a vegetarian is a personal choice, but once you opt in you must know exactly what to eat to stay healthy and fit.

Basic Food Groups

Vegetarian food groups include:

Grains like rice, wheat, rye, oats, millet, barley, amaranth, buckwheat, quinoa, spelt

Fruits

Vegetables

Nuts like almonds, cashews, pecans

Seeds like sunflower and sesame

Legumes like beans, peas, lentils

Types

There are various classifications of a vegetarian. All include the food groups listed above.

Vegans avoid all animal products including fish, meat, poultry, dairy, honey and other animal by-products. The stick exclusively to the list of food groups above.

Lactovegetarians add milk and dairy products.

Lacto-ovo-vegetarians add eggs, milk and dairy products.

Pescovegetarians add fish and seafood.

Pros vs. Cons

Pros

Studies have shown that going veg can help lower cholesterol and the risk of heart disease. You’ll also decrease the amount of hormones ingested from animal meats and dairy food (unless you already purchase hormone-free varieties).

Cons

There are nutritional concerns if you become a vegetarian—the stricter you are the more nutrients you need to pay attention to. But you can also be a vegetarian and go “off the deep end” (so to speak). I’ve counseled vegetarians who loved to fry, indulged in vegetarian-friendly processed foods and ate way too many avocados. The diet still needs to be balanced and healthy.

Nutritional Concerns

Here are some of the basic nutrients vegetarians need to pay attention to:

Protein: If you’re eating dairy, eggs, or fish you just need to make sure to eat your daily dose. However, vegans need to make sure they get protein from foods like beans, lentils, tofu (soy), grains, and nuts. Eating a variety of proteins helps ensure you’re getting all of your essential amino acids.

Calcium: Vegans and pesco-vegetarians need to make sure to get in calcium from foods like fortified juices and milk alternatives, leafy greens, beans, and almonds. If you don’t think you’re getting enough then consult your medical professional or registered dietitian about taking a calcium supplement.

Iron: Iron-deficiency anemia is the most common deficiency in the United States. Vegetarians who eat eggs do have a good source of the mineral, but other sources are beans, fortified oatmeal, beans, and leafy green vegetables. Using a cast-iron pan once or twice a week can also help get in some iron.

Vitamin D: This mineral is most commonly found in fish liver oils and fortified milk. You can also get your vitamin D by being exposed to the sun. Supplements are available, but it’s important to talk to your doctor as it’s the most toxic vitamin when you take too much.

Bottom Line: Before going veg, do your homework. Map out your allowable foods, ingredients, recipes and make sure you’re able to maintain a well-balanced diet.

Family Fitness Matters

Keeping active can be more fun if you get the entire family involved. There are so many things that you can do together and reap both benefits of better relationships and healthier bodies.

Let’s Get it Started

The first step in getting started is setting a designated time throughout the week. Once planned into your week, accountability is essential for continued success. Journaling activities helps everyone see their progress. One way to keep track is to start a weekly log or chart for all to tally their activities. Younger children can color in a thermometer to signify burning calories while older teenagers can just log minutes in a small journal at the end of each week. When planning activities, keep in mind to do things that makes each family member feel successful and that you adapt the activities age appropriately. Emphasize the importance of having fun rather than winning or losing when playing physical games. Taking turns to decide “what” the family activity is to engage each week is another way to get everyone involved.

Making the Connection

Using these designated times are a great way to check in with each other. Taking a walk together to the park or local coffee shop is one activity before church or scheduled practices, that can help strengthen family ties. My family would take the dog to the forrest preserve every Sunday morning and play in the leaves, snow, or puddles. It gave us time together and helped our children realize how fun it could be to walk. Remember fitness and movement heighten our energies and stimulate social engagement.

Get Out and Play

Sometimes just getting off the couch to change the channel and limiting television viewing can be a good start in getting your family to exercise. Additionlly, spending time outside almost always translates into movement. So get you and your kids out the door and into the yard. There are so many games you can play like “Hide and Seek” and “Freeze Tag” and making exercise fun makes all the difference in the world. Counting jumps on a pogo stick or counting hula hoop rotations brings an element of competition and more fun! Keep in mind, for younger children, it is important to have designated indoor and outdoor play areas where rolling, jumping, kicking, bouncing and tumbling are allowed. These types of activities can be used as rewards instead of food too, instilling more healthy habits.

All Growed Up

Teenagers and young adults will have different ideas on exercise. It’s not enough to get them off the sofa, they may enjoy more of the video gaming and traditional health club activites that adults enjoy too. Creating a contest among family members is one way to get everyone involved. One idea is to see who logs the most minutes of healthy habits including exercise, meditation and meaningful rest as well. As far as my family we have fun running together, lifting weights, and going rock climbing too. We still do family walks and even play video games together.

Living healthy and moving daily will give you more energy, help build self esteem and help you to live longer. Making time with your family matters and creates wonderful memories, but only you can make it happen.
